CONSERVATIVE ENVIRONMENTALISM by Mr. Right April 21, 2009

Mr. Right is a student at W.C. East High School.  His weekly column “The Conservative Manifesto” is a regular item every Wednesday.

Conservatives frequently come under fire for being “anti environment.” Their accusers conveniently forget that the environmental movement was started by conservatives. In his speech at Osawatomie in 1910, Theodore Roosevelt, who is widely hailed as the first modern Republican, outlined his policy of conservation stating:

“Conservation means development as much as it does protection. I recognize the right and duty of this generation to develop and use the natural resources of our land but I do not recognize the right to waste them, or to rob, by wasteful use, the generations that come after us. I ask nothing of the nation except that it so behave as each farmer here behaves with reference to his own children. That farmer is a poor creature who skins the land and leaves it worthless to his children. The farmer is a good farmer who, having enabled the land to support himself and to provide for the education of his children, leaves it to them a little better than he found it himself. I believe the same thing of a nation.”

When boiled down, Roosevelt’s position of conservation means that while we should make use of the resources with which our nation has been blessed, we should not needlessly squander or abuse them. This is a philosophy with biblical underpinnings; in Genesis, God gives Adam (and all mankind) stewardship over the earth. The terms of man’s stewardship are that while man is allowed to use the resources of the earth, he must ensure that those resources are responsibly cared for and that they are replenished for use by future generations. This creates a system which when followed will ensure that man is able to work in harmony with nature.

Conversely, the majority of liberals embrace a system known as preservation. Preservation calls for man to simply leave nature alone. It is easy to see why this is a foolish system; if man leaves nature alone he is neither able to use the land nor to ensure its future existence. Conservation, the system embraced by the majority of conservatives, is the only viable environmental policy. Under conservation, the country would be allowed and or continue to be allowed to: drill in Alaska, provide recreational forests for the public use, continue to harvest lobster and other sea creatures, and much, much more. All of these things can be accomplished through the responsible system of conservation, a conservative principle which is not surprisingly superior to the corresponding liberal principle.

A REFLECTION FROM GROUND ZERO by East junior Kate Crooks March 26, 2009

A MEETING TIME

(NEW YORK – March 12) – Behind a linked fence covered with sheets describing sparking skyscrapers or boards warning, “Post No Bills,” New York’s Ground Zero site of the World Trade Center disaster zone is a slowly developing construction area. Across the street is a small museum tucked in beside the local fire station and a pizza joint. Inside are chunks of the structure of the Twin Towers, items found after the buildings collapsed, and the photos and tributes retrieved from the fences where once grieving family and friends had placed either “Have you seen me?” pictures or mementoes of a loved one lost. There also are displays recounting the attacks on the Trade Center Towers, a spartan model display of the Towers, and a large table where visitors can write expressions of, well, whatever comes to mind on large postcards to be placed in a clear poly box. Next to the box are small containers of tissues. Their purpose is clear. And, yes, they were being used. By me.

During the events of 9/11/01, I was hundreds of miles away in Florida, attending elementary school. I was about the age of what my father was when President John Kennedy was shot. For his father, the singular event was the attack on Pearl Harbor, and for his father, ah, not sure they had much in the way of electronic media back then.

I suppose every generation has its own meeting place – the spot, not in space, but in time – where we all have gathered as one to experience something in common, something we knew instantly as society-altering. Other memories fade, but we all remember where we were and what we were doing that day we all came together.

My memories came flooding back to me as I walked past the talking displays and long-cooled metal shards. I remember my school putting up a display of support consisting of a red, white and blue “flag” composed of the children of the school dressed in these patriotic colors. Each child was in a red shirt, or white blouse or blue jacket. Most prominent was my little sister, wearing a star-spangled bandana and a gap-toothed grin. To me, that image resonates more than the photos of the Tower collapse because Tori’s smile burst through her inner turmoil as she had nightmares of the attack for months. Yet, there was the brave smile underneath the bright, three-colored scarf. A symbol of hope, of strength, of character. We would survive, we would remember and move on, no matter what the struggle.

Today, the tragedy of the 9-11 attacks lives in my memory in photographic-like fragments and segments of video-like bursts. Yet, enough will always remain: the planes, the towers, my sister’s gap-toothed grin. And always there will remain the certainty that for a single moment I shared a point in time with each of my fellow Americans and resolved: “We shall not – because we cannot – forget.”

A NEW ERA OF RESPONSIBILITY by Mr. Right March 11, 2009

Mr. Right is a student at W.C. East High School.  His weekly column “The Conservative Manifesto” is a regular item every Wednesday.

During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to issue a new era of responsibility into Washington. It has taken him less than 100 days to break this promise.

According to United States code of law, title 26, subtitle F, chapter 75, and subchapter A, part 1, section 7201, it is a felony offense to evade taxes which is punishable by fines not exceeding $100,000 and jail time not exceeding five years. Section 7203 of the same title labels the failure to pay tax and or to file a return as a misdemeanor which is punishable by fines not exceeding $10,000 and jail time not exceeding one year.

Are these offenses punished or even paid attention to by our highest levels of government? Apparently not.

Two of Obama’s former nominees for cabinet positions, Bill Richardson and Tom Daschle, both withdrew their names from consideration for office because they “forgot” to follow U. S. law. U.S. trade representative Ron Kirk, who was appointed by Obama, “forgot” to pay $10,000 in taxes. In addition, Mr. Kirk filed season tickets to see the Detroit Mavericks as a tax deduction. Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner (the man who is supposed to make sure that the taxes get collected) “forgot” to pay $130,000 in state and federal income taxes as well as $19,000 in property taxes. So far, the new era of responsibility has been characterized by top government officials who “forgot” to pay their taxes.

Upon learning that his nominees had evaded paying tax, did Obama cancel their nominations? If you guessed yes, you are wrong. Instead of taking the responsible action, Obama decided to treat tax evasion (a felony) as an unimportant and trivial offense. Now our “responsible” nation is run by tax evaders. How is it possible that man who has sworn to uphold the constitution (the constitution authorizes the federal government to regulate tax laws and it states that the federal government will act to enforce said laws) is able to trample over US law? If Obama were a conservative, the media would rip him apart. If Obama wishes to truly claim to be a responsible leader, he must demonstrate said responsibility by asking Mr. Kirk and Mr. Geithner to resign their posts.

The W.C. East Young Republicans welcomed Mayor Richard Yoder and former Mayor Tom Chambers on Wednesday, February 25th 2009.  We had a great turnout and topics of discussion included the much disputed Employee Free Choice Act, what it means to be conservative, and the upcoming school board elections.  Both Mayors shared their political paths, how they campaigned, and their time in the United States Marine Corps serving their country.

Our discussion ended with a group photo, refreshements, and discussion of some East seniors running for Mayor on the Republican ticket!  Thanks to “the two Mayors” for coming out and thanks to all the YRs who attended.

THE CONSERVATIVE MANIFESTO: ABORTION by Mr. Right February 11, 2009

Mr. Right is a student at W.C. East High School.  His weekly column “The Conservative Manifesto” will be a regular item every Wednesday.

1973 was truly a dark year for human life in America; on January 22 of 1972, the Supreme Court proclaimed that abortions (murder) would now be legalized in the US. To the Alan Guttmacher Institute, one of the country’s leading organizations in the field of sexual health and reproduction, around 39,290,477 abortions (murders) have been performed. Nearly FOURTY MILLION babies have not been born as a result of Roe v. Wade. Fortunately, not everyone on the country has stood idly by while these abortions (murders) were performed. The conservative factions of America (Republicans along with members of the Constitution and Libertarian Parties,) have been working tirelessly to have these policies reversed. Seeing as how it was our country’s Conservatives who first gave African Americans the right to vote, it is no surprise that the Conservatives of today still hold human life as their most important value. Countless protests have been organized; a national “40 days of life” will begin on February 25th. Although the efforts of Conservatism are valiant, it is difficult to combat the media supported machine of Liberalism.

The liberals have convinced a large portion of the country that abortion (murder) is a fundamental human right. Even the United Nations, one of the world’s most liberal institutions, does not include the right to an abortion (murder) in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. American Liberalism has sought, is seeking, and will continue to propagate the belief that just because something is inconvenient it is justifiable to destroy us. Under the flawed logic of Liberals, it is the God-given right of every man, woman, and child to murder their grandparents just because they are inconvenienced by the medical bills of said relatives. This fallacy must not go on! If you wish to help put an end to abortion, there is a postcard campaign being organized by the American Catholic Bishops (you do not need to be Catholic to participate). In order to participate in this campaign, please contact your local diocese; they will give you all the information and supplies you need. As for you liberals, ponder this quote: “Abortion is only advocated by persons who have themselves been born” (Reagan).

THE PERILS OF SPREADING THE WEALTH by M. Patrick Morgioni January 27, 2009

In his most recent column, “My New Spread the Wealth Grading Policy,” syndicated Townhall.com columnist Mike S. Adams points out all the ways in which Obama’s combaunistic (a clever combination of Obama and communistic) spread the wealth policy is both unfair and un-American via a comparison to a school grading system. In Mr. Adams’s “new grading system,” students who work hard and strive to be the best will have their points stripped of them. These stolen points will then be redistributed among the lazy students who have chosen to slack off instead of work. Ring any bells? It should.

The “Spread the Wealth Grading Policy” is an excellent metaphor for our country’s welfare system. This un-American creation is the bastard child of F.D.R. and the bleeding heart faction of the liberal movement. Welfare seeks to punish hard work through a combination of removing incentives and by rewarding laziness. Under the current system, a single mother of three could be working three jobs just to get buy while some vagrant from the inner city sits around all day. Guess which one will be suckling from the welfare teat? Welfare will collect the taxes of the single mother and will “redistribute” them to the inner city vagrant. This must not go on. It is time for America to stop the welfare system. Although it is unlikely that the federal system will be dismantled any time soon, it is possible to take action on a local level. Write to your local representatives; petition your state senators and representatives; tell others to do the same. If we Americans who still believe in American values stand together, there is little we cannot accomplish.

FOOTBALL AND POLITICS by M. Patrick Morgioni January 20, 2009

In his article “What Politicians Could Learn from Football,” Terence Jeffrey brilliantly compares capitalism to the beloved American sport of football. He first points out how football exemplifies the American concept of getting what you work for. When he writes “Americans love football because it rewards those who deserve to be rewarded,” he is subtly taking a jab at our country’s welfare system, which rewards the lazy and for doing nothing and being reticent. This system is against both American ideals along with the spirit of football. In 1608, John Smith instituted a policy of “he who does not work, will not eat” in the colony of Virginia. For some reason, this policy stopped being heeded during the FDR era. Jeffrey further elaborates on this theme via his comparison of politicians who wish to transform our great nation into a welfare state in which everyone wins to a prevent defense in football. In a prevent defense, it is simple for the offense to gain easy yardage, resulting in first downs and touchdowns which are underserved.

Mr. Jeffrey’s argument is immensely strengthened by his use of ethos. No real American can deny the shared American value of hard work without betraying the founding principles of their country. Like hard work, another thing that real Americans love is football. Jeffrey could not have picked a better vessel to transfer his ideas on capitalism. It does not take an in depth understanding of Laissez-Faire economics to comprehend a metaphor comparing the merits of hard work to victory on the field. In the words of Sarah Palin, “a free market system allows all parties to compete, which ensures the best and most competitive project emerges, and ensures a fair, democratic process.” Seeing as how Palin is an excellent example of a real and scrupulous American, her belief in free market capitalism further demonstrates how it is a shared belief among Americans. America should take this article to hear and should pay head to the words of John Smith and Sarah Palin. If America wishes to continue to win the “international football game” and to rectify this situation, it must stick to its founding principles; we must cast down the welfare system, encourage hard work, and, in the words of Terence Jeffrey, “boo“the reprehensible politicians who would choose to alter the “rules” of the American Dream, (such as Barney Frank, B. Hussein Obama, and Nancy Pelosi), off the field.

Wow.  Congratulations to the W.C. East Young Republicans for raising over $600 for The Semper Fi Injured Marine Fund.  All monies go directly to aid marines and sailors injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Way to go Vikings!

The Viking Republicans sold t-shirts and petitioned friends and family as a way of thanking our men and women in uniform for all that they do.  Oorah!
